J. For. Sci., 2004, 50(10):447-455 | DOI: 10.17221/4640-JFS

The paper presents models of decennial thinning percents of spruce in mountain locations. They were derived by regression fitting from empirical material with 108 measurements on 93 research plots. Models were derived for untended and partially tended stands. They were compared with the models of thinning percents of spruce at mountain locations from yield tables, induction thinning percents of spruce at lower locations and planned decennial thinnings according to forest management plan. Type of thinnings was analysed by means of thinning indexes and thinning intervals were proposed.

The ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of forest altitudinal zones of the eastern part of the Krušné hory Mts.

J. For. Sci., 2004, 50(10):456-463 | DOI: 10.17221/4641-JFS

By means of Sörensen's index and Renkonen's number, the differences in species composition and abundance of the ground beetles (Carabidae) were specified in 5 forest altitudinal zones (3rd, 5th-8th) and also the faunal similarity in the linking-up forest altitudinal zones. The entry of some species (Carabus coriaceus, Carabus violaceus, Pterostichus niger and Pterostichus oblongopunctatus) into higher altitudes was much more marked than is mentioned in hitherto published information. The objective of the present study was to explore the potential use of the ground beetles...

Possibilities of influencing the rooting quality of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) cuttings

A. Jurásek, J. Martincová

J. For. Sci., 2004, 50(10):464-477 | DOI: 10.17221/4642-JFS

The influence of the date of cutting collection and cutting position in the crown on rooting quality was evaluated in cuttings taken from seven-year ortets. The evaluation of various dates of cutting collection in spring demonstrated a possibility of successful propagation by cuttings during a relatively long period from full bud dormancy to flushing onset. The relationship between the development of aboveground parts (flushing, shoot and bud formation) and rooting quality was not established. The exposure of cuttings in the crown of parent tree with respect to the cardinal points did not influence rooting percentage and quality. A somewhat higher...

Problems of the statistical evidence of feedbacks between forest herb phytocoenoses and soil acidity at pollution load

J. For. Sci., 2004, 50(10):478-488 | DOI: 10.17221/4643-JFS

Emissions and ecological factors are evident in changes of dynamics of global forest ecosystems. Specific develop-ment takes place in these substitute stands on contaminated and devastated plots. The aim of this study was to solve a problem if forest stands were able to indicate its real natural potential in these anthropogenically influenced conditions. In ten substitute stands on experimental plots samples were taken in autumn 2002 from H-horizons and A-horizons and phytocoenological relevés were taken in the area of the firm Městské lesy Trutnov (Poříčský hřbet Plateau, 530 m a.s.l.; +6.9°C; 671 mm). A hypothesis that the combination of herbaceous...

Gradients of the content of photosynthetic pigments and radiation as manifestations of the health condition of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.)

T. Zemánek, M. Martinková, D. Štěrbová

J. For. Sci., 2004, 50(10):489-495 | DOI: 10.17221/4644-JFS

The paper deals with the health condition of sample trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) on the basis of the distribution and quantity of chlorophyll a + b and carotenoids with respect to the gradient of radiation in the tree crown. The content of photosynthetic pigments (PhP) was determined by spectrophotometric analysis. The sample tree is situated at the Rájec nad Svitavou locality, the Drahany Upland, altitude 625 to 640 m. Within the gradient of the content of PhP in the vertical and horizontal profile of a tree, it was shown that the inner coordination of the content of PhP in the crown in relation to the...
