Land-use legacies: multi-centuries years-old management control of between-stands variability at the landscape scale in Mediterranean mountain forests, FranceOriginal Paper

Traditional land use has shaped the Mediterranean region for a long time and has resulted in present-day complex landscapes. The land abandonment dating from the 19th century at a site located in the southwestern Alps (France) makes it possible to analyse how present-day forest stands inherit from past land uses. Tree composition and tree age structure were analysed in three stands resulting from different former land uses, i.e. ancient coppice, formerly grazed area and formerly tilled area. The ancient coppice contains the densest tree cover and is dominated by Fagus sylvatica, whereas the formerly ploughed and grazed areas are...

The organic matter produced and accumulated by plants is a crucial component in the ecosystems on environmentally disturbed sites. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of initial fertilising on the aboveground and belowground tree biomass of Norway spruce. The biomass amount, distribution and chemical composition were studied in a young spruce stand growing on an acidified mountain clear-cut tract. The fertilised trees accumulated a higher amount of tree biomass. They nonetheless showed lower concentrations of P, N, and K in some root compartments than control trees, which could be ascribed to a dilution effect. As for the aboveground...

Financing of forestry from public sources in the Czech RepublicOriginal Paper

Financial means for multifunctional forestry activities come from different public sources, both national and international ones. There are several basic types of financial instruments used for the supporting of non-market forest services, both direct and indirect ones. Financial means should be accounted and treated separately by their different social and economic essence, as proper subsidies, compensations and payments for services. Financial means going to forestry are generally considered as subsidies in the Czech Republic (CR). But overall it can be stated that only a small part of the financial sources going to forestry via the Ministry of Agriculture...

Wood decomposition activity of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) isolate in situOriginal Paper

J. For. Sci., 2013, 59(1):28-33 | DOI: 10.17221/60/2012-JFS

The purpose of the research was to examine the decomposition rate of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and aspen (Populus tremula) logs after an oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) infection as well as the effect of fruit body formation on the chemical composition of wood. The highest mean value of biological efficiency (B.E.) was found on beech logs (29.05%), but relatively high values of B.E. were recorded also on aspen logs (21.69%). The average content of N was about 37% higher in inoculated logs than in the control (not inoculated) ones. The ash content was about 90% higher in inoculated logs. The content of the mineral elements...

Rural development policy in the context of actor-centred institutionalismOriginal Paper

We analysed the formulation of Rural Development Programme of the Slovak Republic for 2007-2013 applying the theory of actor-centred institutionalism and its interaction forms. Approaches accentuating the role of actors and their interactions are an appropriate tool for the better understanding of cross-sectoral relationships and the improvement of public policy coherence in the formulation process of strategic documents in rural development. Methodologically the study is based on a qualitative analysis of documents and standardized interviews. The formulation of RDP SR 2007-2013 is showing signs of cross-sectoral coordination between different actors...
