The new EU Timber Regulation 2023/1115 and its legal implications for the Czech forestry and timber sectorReview

Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products (EUDR) establishes a substantially revised legal framework that extends beyond the previous EU Timber Regulation (EUTR 995/2010) by integrating legality, sustainability, and traceability obligations. This article provides a legal and comparative assessment of the implications of the EUDR for the Czech forestry and timber sector. The methodological approach combines doctrinal interpretation of EU legislation, comparative analysis of national implementation models, and an examination of relevant case law. Experiences from selected EU Member States are used to illustrate institutional, technological, and administrative challenges linked to EUDR implementation. The results indicate that, although the Czech Republic has an established regulatory framework under Act No. 251/2025 Coll., effective compliance with the EUDR will require improved coordination among supervisory authorities and the development of a unified digital platform for submitting and verifying due diligence declarations. Evidence from other European countries shows that integrated monitoring systems and the use of third-party certification can enhance both efficiency and transparency. The study concludes that the successful implementation of the EUDR in the Czech context will depend on institutional capacity, digital readiness, and the ability of forest managers and traders to adapt to more stringent environmental and traceability requirements.

Cut slope stability assessment along forest roads using the limit equilibrium approaches and Slide softwareOriginal Paper

Calculating the factor of safety (FS) as slope stability factor is necessary to prevent environmental damage. Therefore, this paper aims to (i) calculate FS using the limit equilibrium approaches and Slide software and (ii) investigate the stability of slopes according to calculated FS (Janbu and Bishop methods) and status of different sites in the study area (Hyrcanian forest of Iran). Six landslides were selected along the forest road by a field survey. Landslide dimensions including length, width, and height were measured using meters. Slope gradients were measured using the Suunto clinometer. The Slide software was used to evaluate the stability analysis of slopes. According to laboratory tests on soil samples the average of the liquid limit was recorded as 58%. The results of the direct shear test showed that the rate of soil cohesion (c) and coefficient of friction angle (φ) decreased with an increase in moisture content. According to the results, the factors of safety for landslide sites (Sites 1-6) were calculated to be 1.3, 0.65, 0.76, 0.55, 1.19 and 1.51, respectively. These calculated FS can accurately determine the slope status in terms of slope stability. According to the software classification, the status of Site 1 is "susceptible to landside". Sites 2, 3 and 4 are "very high risk". Also, the status of Sites 5 and 6 are "high risk" and "stable", respectively. The instability of the slopes in studied sites is related to the drainage system (lack of culverts or ditches) as well as marlstone as bedrock. According to the calculated FS in different sites and comparison of the obtained results with the real conditions of sites, it can be concluded that the slope stability analysis in the Slide software is very accurate and it can be used to determine the factor of safety under different conditions in terms of morphology, hydrology and soil mechanics.

Selection of trees for rubbing by the wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the Sidi Boughaba forested Moroccan Ramsar site: Assessment, implications, and perspectivesOriginal Paper

Knowledge of mechanisms by which large mammals select rubbing trees (RT) is a major challenge for the effective management of forests and wildlife resources. In this study, we investigated this issue regarding the Wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the Moroccan forested site of Sidi Boughaba as a case study. We used data from four sets of variables, namely topography, forest type, landscape composition, and microhabitat, measured at 58 rub and control trees, to determine the factors associated with the occurrence of RT by means of generalized linear mixed models. Our results showed that the RT occurrence increased with a high density of red juniper trees and declined with distance to the nearest footpath. Variation partitioning analysis revealed that the pure fraction of microhabitat was the most robust in explaining this occurrence (adj. R2 = 0.17, P < 0.001), followed by that of forest type (adj. R2 = 0.05, P < 0.05). A scientific monitoring system must be set up to strike a balance between the availability of forest trees on the one hand and the pressure exerted by wild boars on this internationally importance site on the other. It is imperative to test the geographical generality of our results in other Mediterranean forests.

The factors limiting the venison market in the Czech Republic and options for limiting their impact on the ForestryOriginal Paper

This article focuses onthe development possibilities ofthe venison market inthe Czech Republic. The main factors affecting the primary game market were investigated, both production limitations onthe side ofthe hunters and onthe side ofthe game production purchase prices. These factors were analysed inthe context ofthe consumer prices ofgeneral meat production and the purchase prices ofcommon meat (beef, pork). Furthermore, the size ofthe total game market was estimated, taking into account the export and import ofthis commodity. The potential venison market size for the Czech Republic was also established inthe study. The gap between the development ofthe market consumer prices and purchase prices ofthe venison was analysed. The conducted research further revealed that the respondents donot perceive arelationship between the production ofvenison and the protection offorest ecosystems. With few exceptions, they donot realise that bybuying and consuming venison, they can contribute tothe support offorestry. Furthermore, the perception ofthe role ofthe forest environment inrelation togame meat bythe public does not correspond tothe need toregulate the game density tolimit damage toforest stands. The results ofthis research are recommendations which mainly consist inexpanding the offer ofthe primary production toproducts significantly closer tothe consumer market (moving from aproducer market to aconsumer market), and the implementation ofactivation campaigns (tastings, presentations ofopinion makers). Atthe same time, our work revealed the need for further development, and byincreasing the value for the customer who, with the appropriate marketing strategy, can perceive this product as apremium organic food through which they contribute tosustainable forest management.

Forests cover almost one half ofEuropean land. Therefore, land taxes, including taxes from forests, are essential for amunicipality's income. The land tax system isimplemented ondifferent levels, mainly nationally and locally. Therefore, many land tax features are settled byfederal law, and others differ according tothe local tax administrators.The objective ofthe paper istocompare the current laws and principles and the implementation process offorest land inSlovakia and Portugal. Wehave selected countries from different geographical areas ofEurope. Even though the forest compositions and forest ownership differ, weaimed toidentify whether the forest land tax systems can besimilar. Weanalysed the legislation and strategic documents onthe national level that helped ustodescribe the land tax system and its general features (e.g.taxpayer, tax rate, tax base, exemption options, tax period, orpenalties). Inboth countries, the national tax law governs the tax implementation and settles any basic processes related totax collection. The municipalities have the right torevise both the tax rates and exemptions. The results also show that forest owners inSlovakia have more options for tax exemptions than inPortugal.


Modelling the tree height-diameter relationship ofMacedonian pine (Pinus peuce Gris.) forests inNorth MacedoniaOriginal Paper

Themost crucial individual tree variables inforest management are diameter atbreast height (DBH) and height oftrees (H). Projection ofstand development over time relies onaccurate height-diameter functions. Themain aim ofthis paper istodefine the best usable model for tree height prediction from diameter atbreast height. Weexplore the place where the Macedonian pine was discovered inthe Baba Mountain inthe Pelister National Park inNorth Macedonia. Thus, weestablished 48experimental plots (EP) with acircle shape, aradius of12.62 m and anarea of500 m2each. TheEPwere established inpure Macedonian pine stands inan elevation gradient between 950 ma.s.l. and 1 700 ma.s.l. Every tree inthe EPwas attributed with data for diameter atbreast height, tree height, and stand characteristics data (elevation, slope, aspect, coordinate) aswell. Forpredicting the tree height, weused 40models from many authors which are the most usable inforest practice. Also, weprepared evaluations and tests for all models, inorder tochoose the best responsive model for the Macedonian pine forest. Forpredicting the best tree height model for Macedonian pine, wedecided onMamoun's equation, with ahigh correlation value of0.85with 73% out ofthe observed data. Also, this model showed alower root mean square error of32.65, alower model prediction accuracy of6.77, and alower mean absolute percent error of11.73%. Finally, itcan beconcluded that the nonlinear connection between DBHand tree height isthe most responsive regression model.

Genetic diversity and phylogenetic analysis of Robinia pseudoacacia L. populations using ISSR markers, ITS1 and trnL-F intergenic spacer sequencesOriginal Paper

Robinia pseudoacaciaL. isadeciduous tree planted almost all around the world for awide variety ofuses such asornamental inurban ecosystems and forest trees inafforestation. This study aims toevaluate the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relations ofR.pseudoacacia using some selected populations inIstanbul and Kocaeli cities. For this aim, molecular marker-assisted and DNA sequence-based analyses were performed. According tothe results, nine of15inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR)primers gave clear and distinguishable bands with atotal of100 loci. The percentage ofpolymorphic loci (PPL) was calculated as100% for multi-populations and ranged from 46% to76% for single populations. Nei's gene diversity value was calculated between 0.165 and0.251. The lowest and highest PPLwere found inpopulations ofBarbaros Boulevard and Dilovası District, respectively. Population structure analysis showed seven different genetic structures for five populations. Internal transcribed spacer1region (ITS1) and trnL-Fintergenic spacer region were used toexamine the phylogenetic relationships ofR.pseudoacacia, and both regions showed ahigh discriminative power atthe family level. Based onthe findings, R.pseudoacacia, as a forest tree residing in the urban ecosystem, may face the risk of population decline in the upcoming years due to its moderate/low genetic diversity and susceptibility to environmental pressures.

Detecting land use/land cover changes and forest degradation: A case study of the lower Soummam valley, northern AlgeriaOriginal Paper

The environment ischaracterised bysubtle and major mutations that cause changes inland use/land cover. Analysis ofits dynamics and identification ofvulnerable areas are critical tomaintaining ecosystem services. The aim ofthis research istoquantify and qualify land cover dynamics over a30-year period. Itwill also highlight forest degradation from asupervised classification ofLandsat satellite imagery (L5TM1987, L7ETM+2000, and L8OLI/TIRS 2019). The dynamics ofland use/land cover were investigated byamaximum likelihood approach using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS). Six major land use and land cover (LULC) types were mapped (build-up, agriculture, forest, clearing, matorral and olive cultivation). The classification reports made itpossible toassess areduction inforest cover (from 14 470.11 ha to5 203.26 ha) and anincrease inbuildings (from 6 033.69 ha to9 515.61 ha),and agricultural land (from 9 517.59 ha to12 338.19 ha). The results were validated by a kappa coefficient of 0.93, 0.91, and 0.96, which showed that the model had successfully predicted LULC changes. We anticipate that the results will provide a basis for decision-making as well as a starting point for further in-depth studies in sustainable management and development of natural resources in the study region.

Comparison of growth, structure and production in stands of naturally regenerated Betula pendula and Populus tremulaOriginal Paper

InCentral Europe, the most important pioneer species are silver birch and European aspen. Changes indisturbance regime and aneconomic interest for this species have led tostudies onthis species and stands. Two naturally regenerated dense stands ofbirch (Betula pendula Roth –silver birch monoculture) and aspen (Populus tremulaL.–European aspen monoculture) were selected from aQuerceto –Fagetum mesotrophicum site toobserve responses under the same conditions inCentral Europe. Both stands regenerated after the allochthonous Norway spruce stands dieback atthe site in1999. Within a10 mנ25 m transect established inboth stands, the diameter atbreast height(DBH) ofall the trees was measured between 2015 and 2020. Inaddition, the height and position were recorded for all trees, and sample trees ofboth species were felled for biomass measurement. Ahigher volume production ofaspen atthe beginning (107.48/96.80 m3) and atthe end ofthe experiment (178.32/143.08 m3) was accompanied with alower above-ground wood biomass (WAB). TheWABofbirch increased from 81.9 t·ha–1to103.3 t·ha–1and aspen allocated 79.5 t·ha–1to94.8 t·ha–1ofbiomass. The current annual increment ofbiomass for these stands was 4.3t·ha–1and 3.1 t·ha–1 inthe age range of17to22years.The culmination ofthe volume increment has not yet occurred inany ofthe stands, but the mean annual increment ofwood biomass has already been reached for both stands. Furthermore, the aspen stand tended tobemore dynamic interms ofbiomass allocation and mortality. Also, the lower self-tolerance ofaspen confirmed our hypothesis: the two native pioneer species differ intheir social behaviour within monospecific stands.

Applying the European Union (EU) assessment initiative of forest sustainability in Africa: A case study of the timber harvesting impact on the environment in Sierra LeoneOriginal Paper

The European Union (EU) provides both financial and expert support for sustainable forest management initiatives and also boosts compliance with such initiatives inAfrica. Thus, there isaneed tomonitor the progress ofimplementing such initiatives. The objective ofthis paper istodescribe the role oftimber harvesting entities inenvironmental impact discussions, and toalso identify the role ofEUinstitutions inpromoting forest sustainability inSierra Leone. Data were collected inacontrolled survey from four communities, using aquestionnaire formulated according toguidelines recommended byBabbie and Mouton (2010). The reliability test shows a0.68 internal consistency among the latent variables (Cronbach alpha test). The selected four communities were Bambawo, Dia, Basara, and Menima, with apopulation of6 000, 5 400, 7 500, and 5 600 inhabitants, respectively (Stats SL 2021). A Confirmatory Factor Assessment (CFA) was used for a descriptive statistical analysis of the data. The results showed that the environmental impact has an eigenvalue of 1.08, where only variables with a factor loading exceeding 0.5 were used. The paper concludes with discussions and relevant recommendations on mitigating the impacts of timber harvesting on the environment within the study area.

Integrating indigenous knowledge and culture in sustainable forest management via global environmental policiesReview

This research investigates the intricate connection between indigenous knowledge and sustainable forest management, with two main objectives. It seeks to explore and outline indigenous knowledge, elements, and practices that support sustainable forest management (SFM). It aims to uncover the invaluable traditional insights and practices that have helped preserve and ensure the responsible use of forest ecosystems. Also, it investigated global environmental policies that support indigenous knowledge since the inception of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). A narrative review method was employed to review and analyse peer-reviewed contents and reports to deduce ancestral or traditional wisdom, knowledge, practices, and beliefs from existing studies. The paper extracted data from existing literature from scholarly peer-reviewed journals. It aims to provide useful information for policy-makers, forest managers, and indigenous communities, to promote SFM and the sustainable development goals related to a sustainable environment. The study found that indigenous knowledge (IK) which includes ethnobotanical knowledge and plant selection, mixed land use, seed banks, and cultural beliefs such as sacred groves and taboos are some traditional practices, beliefs, and cultural knowledge that support SFM and can be integrated into international and national environmental management policies which the two-eyed seeing framework (TESF) seeks to promote. The framework highlights the potential of implementing IK into SFM. Also, the Akw: Kon Guidelines, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), are some global environment policies that recognise traditional people and indigenous knowledge since the commencement of the CBD in the nineties. The paper recommends, for a future study, investigating the applicability of the Akw: Kon Guidelines in international and national projects and programs that impact traditional sacred lands, forests and rivers, and indigenous people. Also, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement need to fully acknowledge the supporting role of indigenous knowledge and people in climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions, especially in Africa, since the majority of the world's population constitutes indigenous people who inhabit healthy standing forests and ecosystems.

Forest carbon and a regional perspective on the effectiveness of financial instruments within the forest bioeconomyOriginal Paper

The forest bioeconomy links to a climate-neutral economy for which effective economic and financial promotion is essential to sustainable development. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of financial support on the development of the forest bioeconomy in the Czech Republic in the period 2000–2021. Research objectives were met by applying literature review, time series analysis, spatial data analysis, cartogram and cartodiagram method, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. Firstly, regional divergences in financial flows were observed. Owing to the bark beetle calamity, the peak of the financial support was detected in the Vysoina Region (CZK 4 658/EUR 190 per ha), and the Olomouc Region (CZK 2 780/EUR 113 per ha) in 2020. An upward trend – more than 6-fold growth of financial flows to forestry was found. Secondly, the forest carbon model was discovered and tested. Financial contribution for reforestation, establishment, and tending of forest stands increases net carbon sinks while financial contribution for green and environmentally friendly technologies increases net carbon sources. Regional carbon reservoirs offer the potential to contribute to climate targets and achieve sustainable progress.

Over- and under-bark volume estimation of European larch timber produced by mechanised harvesting in CzechiaOriginal Paper

In Czechia, harvesters contributed 43% of the total annual timber production in 2022. It is assumed that harvester technology will continue to be used intensively in the future, even though there is a change in the tree species composition of forests after the recent bark beetle outbreak and an increase in the use of close-to-nature forest management. The aim of this study was to analyse the over- and under-bark volume estimates of European larch timber produced by a harvester in Czechia. This study used the M3s price category for volume estimation. This volume was compared with the M3toDE price category. The M3toDE price category underestimated the over-bark volume by 5.59% compared to the M3s price category. However, for use in forestry practice in Czechia it is currently necessary to use the M3toDE price category. Therefore, the M3toDE price category was used to compare under-bark volumes according to different bark deduction methods. Differences were found between all the five methods investigated. Understanding this sub-issue will help in training operators, acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the functioning of harvester software and maximising the economic effect of the sale of larch timber.

Change in forest species composition and its projections into the economy of forest ownersOriginal Paper

Increasing the proportion of broadleaved trees in stands during regeneration raises questions about how these trees will be reflected in the economics of forest owners and whether these owners can influence certain economic aspects during stand management. In this respect, the paper focuses mainly on the revenue side of forestry and, crucially, analyses the selling prices of assortments of tree species groups as offered in public tenders of state forests under the outsourcing business model. The price level of spruce is used as a benchmark for comparisons in the analyses. It is clear that the cultivation of species-diverse forests entails an increase in the representation of a higher number of tree species and, presumably, increased stand stability. However, a concomitant consequence may be an increase in costs and a reduction in returns for forest owners. Here, the revenue from timber sales can be improved by appropriate adjustment of the species composition through educational interventions. All this is in the context of the economic viability of forestry, as declared in a number of strategic and forest policy documents, which essentially depends on the timber production function of forestry and the subsequent processing of timber.

Using marteloscope in selection forestry – Study case from 'Pokojn hora' (Czech Republic)Original Paper

Intoday's forestry practices, integrated management isthe prevailing approach. One method gaining traction isretention forestry, where certain trees, known asbiotope trees providing microhabitats (TreMs), are preserved during harvesting operations. This article delves into hands-on training for marking interventions using marteloscope plots, focusing specifically on'Pokojn hora,' a1-hectare plot situated inthe southeast ofthe Czech Republic. Field surveys were conducted using FieldMap technology, capturing essential data for all trees: coordinates, species, diameter, height, and health status. Additionally, details such aswood quality, economic value, microhabitats, and habitat value were documented for each tree. Forestry engineering students virtually mapped out interventions onthe marteloscope plot, testing 11solution variants across 2scenarios tostrike abalance between economic goals and biodiversity conservation. The plot hosts 155 microsites, predominantly onFagus sylvatica (common beech) with 108 microsites. The likelihood of TreMs increases with tree diameter, while the correlation between a tree's economic value and its diameter was confirmed. Optimal management suggests maintaining 10 habitat trees per ha to reconcile economic and ecological objectives during harvesting operations. In essence, we contend that the adoption of retention forestry practices coupled with marteloscope training can play a pivotal role in arresting biodiversity decline within forest ecosystems.

Preliminary results from simultaneous planting of Fagus sylvatica and pioneer species on calamity clearingsOriginal Paper

Wecompared the biological and economic effects ofsimultaneous artificial regeneration ofmixtures ofpioneers (birch –Betula pendula Roth oraspen – Populus tremula L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) with plots ofmonospecific beech. During the period oftwo years, the height ofyoung beech trees, their mortality, and the regeneration cost were analysed inthe following treatments: monospecific beech (9 000 pcs·ha−1), monospecific beech (5 000 pcs·ha−1), beech/birch (5 000/2 500 pcs·ha−1) and beech/aspen (5 000/2 500 pcs·ha−1). Four plots (differing insoil and altitude) were established inthe region ofthe Czech Republic inautumn2021. Thepositive biological effect ofthese pioneers was detected only inthe treatments where the initial planting stock ofthe pioneers was substantially higher than inthat ofbeech (onaverage 39 cm vs.100 cm, respectively). However, the expenses ofsimultaneous regeneration were about 15%lower compared toplots with monospecific beech indensities like 9 000 pcs·ha−1, and around 35%higher than inthe monospecific beech plots with adensity of5 000 pcs·ha−1.

Influences of determined and estimated dendrometric variables on the precision of volumetric modellingOriginal Paper

The use of independent variables in volumetric modelling is an important step in fitting models to represent tree or stand characteristics. The DBH measured at 1.3 m from the ground level and total tree height (Ht) are the most commonly used independent variables when modelling individual tree volumes. This work aimed to analyze the importance of independent variables in fitting and selecting volumetric equations. A total of 750 trees from an experiment with three Eucalyptus spp. clones planted in five spacings in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco were used. Four statistical procedures were applied to compare the equations: Adjusted Fit Index (AFI), Akaike information criterion (AIC), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and a completely random design having the real tree volume as control and the fit equations as treatments. The error measuring heights in the field (EH) was also analyzed. Four heights were evaluated: Ht, height estimated in the field (He) and heights adjusted (Ha) from hypsometric relationships using the DBH [Ha (a)] and D1.7 [Ha (b)], which was the diameter most correlated with the volume. The result indicates that all 18 fitted models provided high precision volumetric equations which do not differ at the 5% significance level.

This study isbased onthe use ofLandsat8and 9images for two dates in2013 and 2022, and the calculation ofthe Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) toidentify changes invegetation cover between 2013 and 2022. The calculation ofNDVIand the realization ofthe vegetation change map showed aregression ofthe forest cover between 2013 and 2022 with arate of–5.53% ofthe total ofthe study area with ageneral negative change of28.62% ofthe study area. This regression isessentially linked tonatural and anthropogenic factors. This work can beavaluable tool for sustainable management ofthe forest ofthis watershed; moreover, the method isalso adaptable toother watersheds ofthe northeastern region ofAlgeria.

Provenance affects the growth and mortality of teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) plantations cultivated in central NicaraguaOriginal Paper

Teak has been planted extensively bysmallholders inCentral America within reforestation programmes and has become one ofthe most valuable timbers. The five-year growth and mortality ofteak cultivated in aplantation incentral Nicaragua, representing sites atthe low limit ofteak ecological valence, were evaluated. From 2006 to2010, 72 pure teak stands were established, with 48.93ha intotal. For afforestation, planting stock from five provenances was used and planted at1m 1m spacing tostimulate the height growth and reduce broad crowns formed byself-pruning. Inthe pure teak stands, 144 permanent sample plots of0.01ha insize were established in2011. From 2011 until 2015, the tree height and stem girth ofall individuals inthe studied sample plots were measured, and mortality based onthe stand density was assessed. Significant differences between the provenances were observed. The highest growth was noted inthe Local provenance originated from the studied area, whereas the Semilla provenance from Costa Rica, characterised bythe lowest growth ability, was characterized bylower radial increment and mean tree height with high mortality.

In2021, measurements were done attwo international provenance research trials for silver fir originating from the same series ofexperiments. The investigation was carried out inthe location Vtkov and sov, where both trials were established. Biometric data (tree height, diameter atbreast height) were measured and qualitative traits (stem shape, occurrence ofstem forking, stem damage, bark pattern, and defoliation) were assessed during the early mature stage ofthe experiment. Overbark stem volume and per-hectare standing volume were also calculated. Sixty-five provenances ofdomestic and foreign origin were evaluated inboth trials. Although the results donot indicate unequivocally the most suitable ormost productive provenance inthe trials, provenances ofCzech origin including the ones originating from the surrounding natural forest areas perform consistently better than the average. The least productive provenances, onthe other hand, were those from parts ofBulgaria, Austria, and especially Italy, which achieved the poorest results even instem shape. InCzech conditions, therefore, Italian fir provenances have not proved sosuccessful asthey have inthe United Kingdom.

Herbivorous ungulate diets affect population performance and overall forest health through balanced interactions onplant-herbivore relations; therefore,understanding them iscritical. Faeces are frequently used inungulate nutritional ecology because they can provide information about animals’ digestive efficiency. Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) have different morpho-physiological and ecological constraints, and these differences should bereflected intheir faeces. Onthe other hand, the lack ofinformation about the animal (sex, age, reproductive status, diet selection, etc.) may bechallenging for such studies. This study aimed todetect species’ different susceptibility tothese factors reflected inanimals’ faeces. Thus, wehypothesised that near-infrared reflectance spectrometry (NIRS) could distinguish between the faecal nutrients oftwo cervids. Wecollected 94 usable faeces from both species along the forest transect inBohemian forests inthe Czech Republic, covering 2500ha. Roe and red deer overlap was determined using the four faecal nutritional components ontwo axes. Nodiscrimination occurred, refuting our hypothesis and highlighting that out-of-control variables are critical for faecal studies inuncontrolled settings. Fibrous parts explained the most variance (48%), indicating animals’ strong reliance onnutrition quality. Apparently, uncontrolled supplementary feeding produced similar faecal nutrient outcomes during the nutrition-limiting winter, which was theoretically supported bythe animal’s response topredation and hunting pressure. The inability ofNIRS toidentify the source of Ninfaeces may also explain the lack ofdiscrimination.

Effect of forest management on the genetic diversity of Abies hidalgensis, a threatened species with restricted distributionOriginal Paper

Abies hidalgensis isan endemic species from the state ofHidalgo, Mexico, that has been registered only innine fragmented relict populations that have atotal of1000 individuals among them. Intensive forest management takes place infive ofthe populations under specific programs focused onPinus spp. Still, itis necessary toknow the impact ofthese activities onthe genetic diversity ofthe threatened species, if restoration and conservation strategies are tobe proposed. The aim ofthis work was toestimate the effect offorest management onthe genetic structure ofA.hidalgensis using seven nuclear molecular markers developed for A. guatemalensis (Ab07, Ab08, Ab09, Ab12, Ab15, Ab20, Ab23). The species was sampled growing under two different conditions; (i)areas under forest management and (ii)conserved areas. Two indexes ofgenetic diversity were evaluated, observed and expected heterozygosity. The genetic structure was determined byan analysis ofmolecular variance and aBayesian assignment model. Abottleneck analysis was also carried out. The populations were found tohave acommon genetic base (differentiation coefficient FST=0.056, number of migrants per generation Nm=43), which suggests recent fragmentation ofthe distribution, which inturn increases the bottleneck effect inmanaged areas (Wilcoxon probability Wp=0.007 and 0.016). This explains the apparently high heterozygous level (He=0.69) and low inbreeding. Our results are important asthey may beused todesign strategies for management and conservation ofA. hidalgensis.

Intensive initial care of silver fir using improving compounds: A way to support diverse forests?Original Paper

Insome cases, itis difficult topromote climax tree species inthe forest stand composition. Inthe Czech Republic, silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) is atypical example. This study offers anevaluation ofthe use oftwo improving compounds for tree plantations inthe initial stage ofgrowth inCentral Bohemia. Inthe experiment, wemeasured the initial growth performance of ayoung fir plantation treated with abrassinolide compound (concentration 1:100 and 1:200) and Bio-Algeen® prior toplanting and compared itwith control treatment: weassessed height, root collar diameter, vitality and mortality rate during the period 2014–2019. Cumulative mortality rate ofthe plantation reached 25% atthe end ofthe monitoring period, without any significant differences between variants. Height increment ofthe variant treated with Bio-Algeen® was significantly (P< 0.05) lower than the growth ofbrassinolide-treated variants, all treated variants were comparable with the control variant. The plantation underwent adrought-stress period in2014 and 2015, which resulted inworsened vitality and colour across variants. As aresult ofthe simple economic analysis, the most expensive inputs are planting stock and labour, therefore the price and application ofadditional substances should not affect decision-making.

Comparison of nutrient and carbon stocks in the aboveground biomass of mature silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) standsOriginal Paper

The aim ofthe study was tocompare the stock ofessential nutrients and carbon inthe aboveground biomass ofmature stands ofsilver fir and Norway spruce. Acomparison was carried out for 14 mixed stands ofspruce and fir. The tree-level dendrometric characteristics were taken from experimental measurements orwere generated using the SIBYLA growth simulator. The amount ofbiomass was calculated using allometric equations. Samples ofstem wood, stem bark, and needles were taken and analysed for carbon, nitrogen, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and sulphur concentrations. Using biomass data, the concentrations ofthe elements were converted into the stock atthe stand level. Overall, spruce fixes agreater amount ofcarbon. The difference isinthe carbon allocation, where fir allocates more carbon inthe crown and spruce inthe stem. Fir needles contain agreater amount ofnutrients than spruce needles. Ahigher supply ofphosphorus, nitrogen, and especially potassium was found inthe stem wood and bark offir, the amount ofwhich ismore than twice that ofspruce. The stem wood ofspruce, onthe other hand, fixes more calcium and magnesium. Aspart ofthe study, linear regression models predicting the stock ofnutrients and carbon depending onthe stand basal area were parameterised.

Land abandonment and the emergence ofnew forest areas create novel dynamics for forest ecosystems and landscapes. Modelling isoften used toforecast tree species composition, age group distribution and spatial patterns inthe future. The aim ofthis study was todevelop three scenarios for changes intree species composition, stand age distribution and spatial patterns ofnew forest areas and permanent forests using Latvia asacase study. Weselected 19study areas ofthe size 10 kmנ10 km tosample the variety offorest cover patterns, tree species, and stand age. Using GIS tools, wedeveloped three scenarios: baseline, commercial and conservation. Results showed that the conservation scenario resulted inthe most even-aged group distribution. Scenarios predicted the increase ofPicea abies area (reaching 29.3% inpermanent forests and even 45.7% innew forests) and the reduction ofPinus sylvestris inmost cases. Changes inthe median patch area were the best indicator for evaluation ofdifferent scenarios with the largest patches ofnew forest areas for the conservation scenario (1.92±1.23 ha). The existing structural and compositional integrityofsampled forest landscapes was best retained under the baseline and conservation scenarios, while the commercial scenario indicated more fragmented forest landscapes inthe future.

Simulating differences between forwarding short and normal-length timberOriginal Paper

Normal log lengths inNorway are 3–6 m (NL), but occasionally there isademand for short timber with a2.5 m log length (ST). There are concerns that STcould reduce the forwarders' productivity. Six type stands were created based onharvester data. Different assortment distributions, conditions, and forwarders were simulated ineach type stand. Itwas found that anadditional STassortment almost always decreased productivity (from –15.5 to+4%). Increased forwarding distance (m), more difficult driving conditions, and increased log concentration [m3·(100 mstrip road)–1] decreased the productivity difference between sites with STand NLand sites with onlyNL. Increased forwarder size increased the productivity difference between sites with STand NLand sites with onlyNL. Itispossible toload two stacks ofST onsome forwarders. Such loading was more productive than loading one stack onlonger forwarding distances, while the opposite was the case onshort distances. However, loading two stacks ofSTcan lead tooverloading.

Development of Douglas fir merchantable stem volume model in the conditions of the Czech RepublicOriginal Paper

A precise merchantable stem volume model of Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] is missing in the Czech Republic. The aim of this study was to fit a new model through the reparametrization of volume equations (used in the Czech Republic or in other countries). We tested four volume equations (two from the Czech Republic, one from France and one from British Columbia) in the form of a nonlinear least squares model (NLS), weighted least squares model (WLS), and nonlinear mixed effects model (NLME). In all the tested models, the diameter at breast height of a tree and the total height of a tree were used as independent variables. Models were fitted on a dataset of 185 felled sample trees from eleven research areas with ages between 19–113 years. We have found that the model according to Omule et al. (1987) fits the merchantable stem volume as the best in the version of WLS model. Median value of the relative error of the final model was only –0.53%, which is less than the errors of models which are still used in the Czech Republic today.

Understanding the role of ecotypic factors in the early growth of Pinus sylvestris L.Original Paper

Theecological significance ofScots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) inEurope, especially inareas devastated bybark beetles, has led toits consideration asasubstitute for Norway spruce. This pioneering species boasts sun and drought tolerance, fast growth, and wood industry value. Togauge its potential, weexamined two ecotypes across two test sites over two years, focusing onheight and growth increment. Through statistical analysis employing Rsoftware and linear mixed models, weassessed heritability, genotype byenvironment interaction, and spatial correlations. Both ecotypes exhibited significant differences inheight and increment, varying byyear and site. Heritability was higher inthe second year, with increment showing greater stability. Genetic correlations between sites were evident, suggesting stable increment ranking across locations. These findings underscore the role ofecotypic variation inScots pine growth, advocating for its consideration inreforestation. Acknowledging such dynamics isvital for effective forest management and reforestation inCentral Europe, promoting sustainability and informed decision-making. Further research will enhance this understanding ofpreserving and enhancing the region's tree populations.

Preventing forest fires using a wireless sensor networkOriginal Paper

Forest fire is a natural phenomenon in many ecosystems across the world. The forecasting of fire danger conditions resembles one of the most important parts in forest fire management. A ZigBee-based wireless sensor network was proposed for monitoring fire danger and predicting the behaviour of fire after occurrence. This technique is intended for real-time operation, given the urgent need for forest protection against fires. The architecture of a wireless sensor network for forest fire detection is described. From the information collected by the system, decisions on firefighting or fire prevention can be made more quickly by the relevant government departments. We believe that by making the sensor network able to reconfigure rapidly in response to changes in the local conditions upon which the network is dependent, we will generate an adaptable weather monitoring and fire detection system.

City longhorn beetle (Aeolesthes sarta): A review of the species, its distribution, ecology, damage, prevention and controlReview

The city longhorn beetle (Aeolesthes sarta) (CLB) (Coleoptera - Cerambycidae) is a polyphagous invasive pest of both healthy and suppressed broadleaved trees in central Asia. CLB causes a great degree of damage in the countries of its origin. To understand this pest in a better way, a detailed review study has been conducted to gather all the valuable information related to the CLB. This review study covers the main aspects of the CLB, its morphology, ecology, distribution, damage, and control measures. The life span of the CLB is two years. It is mainly distributed in the central Asian countries and preferably damages broadleaved tree species, especially Juglans regia, Populus alba, P. euphratica, Acer spp, Salix alba, S. babylonica, Malus pumila, M. sylvestris, Platanus orientalis and Ulmus spp. Effective control and management practices include cutting, removing + burning of infested trees, cultivating high resilient tree species, use of biocontrol agents (i.e. fungus), and use of aluminium phosphide as a pesticide to significantly help control the CLB population. A CLB invasion in a new favourable habitat could impose a serious threat to broadleaf forests and plantations. Therefore, the keen monitoring and surveying of woodland management techniques are recommended. The strict monitoring and inspection of traded wood material at airports and seaports are highly recommended. There is a need to conduct multiple research studies to profoundly understand the CLB phenology, ecology, transportation mode, and damage severity to bridge the gap.
