The objective of this study was to determine mineral element concentrations (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in various parts of pedunculate oak acorns to estimate variability in the chemical composition of different genotypes. Acorns were collected during the 1998 harvest from seventeen Quercus robur L. genotypes. Trees originated from a vegetative seed plantation Banov Brod, belonging to the Forest Estate Sremska Mitrovica (Srem, Vojvodina, Serbia). The investigation of the nutritional status of acorns revealed significant differences between the studied genotypes. Considering all genotypes, the general sequence of nutrient amounts...
Occurrence and bionomy of Barbitistes constrictus (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) in the eastern part of the Czech Republic

J. For. Sci., 2006, 52(2):61-73 | DOI: 10.17221/4488-JFS
The bionomy of Barbitistes constrictuswas studied using emergence traps, sticky bands, sweeping and counting of females in two localities and Malaise traps in 27 localities in spruce forests in the eastern part of the Czech Republic in 1998-2004. It is a common species there but with a low population density. It has five instars (based on the length of femur and tibia) and the larval development lasts 10-12 weeks. Nymphs climb up to crowns after hatching. Adulthood extends from July to October. Abundance of eggs in the ground is very low. The most effective and exact monitoring method seems to be the method of sticky bands. It is also easy...
Changes in tree species composition, stand structure, qualitative and quantitative production of mixed spruce, fir and beech stand on Stará Píla research plot

J. For. Sci., 2006, 52(2):74-91 | DOI: 10.17221/4489-JFS
The paper is a contribution to the research on problems of thinnings in mixed (spruce-fir-beech) stands situated in the 5th forest altitudinal zone (beech with fir) in the central part of Slovakia. The research was carried out on two series of permanent research plots established in 1972. Each of the series consists of three partial plots where one plot was tended by free crown thinning in the framework of whole-area tending. On the second plot a non-whole-area tending was realised while the third ones were left without planned silvicultural treatment as controls. Dynamic changes in tree species composition, stand structure, qualitative...
Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen and sulphur in relation to critical loads of nitrogen and acidity in the Czech Republic

J. For. Sci., 2006, 52(2):92-100 | DOI: 10.17221/4490-JFS
Estimates of dry and wet deposition of sulphur and nitrogen were compared with critical loads of sulphur and nitrogen in the Czech Republic on 1 ×1 km grid. Deposition was estimated from monitored and modelled concentrations in the atmosphere and in precipitation where the most important acidifying compounds are sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia, and their reaction products. Wet deposition was derived from concentration values for SO42-, NO3- and NH4+ in precipitation and from precipitation amounts. Dry deposition was derived from concentrations of gaseous components and aerosol...
