In vitro propagation of Tilia platyphyllos Scop. has been achieved by axillary shoot proliferation and somatic embryo-genesis. The influence of tree age, explant source, genotype, and phytohormones on micropropagation of juvenile and mature trees of Tilia platyphyllos has been investigated. Nodal segments and shoot tips were used as initial explants for axillary shoot proliferation. Low concentration of cytokinin (BA, BPA, TDZ) plus auxin (IBA) stimulated fast shoot multiplication. Microshootsexcised from proliferating cultures were rooted on low salt medium and produced trees were planted in the field. Embryo-genic tissues...

J. For. Sci., 2003, 49(12):544-551 | DOI: 10.17221/4723-JFS
Four theoretical growth functions, Mitscherlich, Logistic, Gompertz and Korf functions, were applied to the growth data on dbh and tree height of individual Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) trees to model their growth. The current increments, mean increments and relative growth rates of dbh and height as functions of age were given by derivation from the best fit growth functions. The growth processes of dbh and height were divided into three periods by the inflexion points of the corresponding current increment curves.
Diversification of increment reactions of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) from mountainous regions of southern Poland

J. For. Sci., 2003, 49(12):552-558 | DOI: 10.17221/4724-JFS
Dendroclimatological research presented in this paper concerns Douglas fir (P. menziesii) at 17 sites located in the area of the Sudetes Mountains, the Polish part of the Carpathians and Roztocze. The methods of principal components analysis, response function and coefficients of convergence allowed the researchers to determine that the factor which integrated chronologies and determined the annual rhythm of changes in radial increment of the trees under research was the thermal conditions of winter preceding the vegetation season. Thermal conditions and summer rainfall had a slightly smaller impact on the tree increment. The influence of...
Testing of lime tree (Tilia cordata Miller) clones
J. Kobliha, M. Hajnala, V. Janeček
J. For. Sci., 2003, 49(12):559-574 | DOI: 10.17221/4725-JFS
Previous experiences with breeding of lime tree (Tilia cordata Miller) in European countries are shown in this paper. The first results were obtained from the evaluation of juvenile planting of lime tree (Tilia cordata Miller) in the Czech Republic, founded in the School Forest Enterprise Kostelec nad Černými lesy. Lime tree clones (initially cultivated in vitro) were evaluated for growth parameters and also according to the growth form of the different clones. Individual clones were also checked for mortality.
Game appreciation in legislative conditions of the Czech Republic

J. For. Sci., 2003, 49(12):575-579 | DOI: 10.17221/4726-JFS
An analysis was made of the present situation concerning game appreciation in the Czech Republic. A study was conducted into effective laws and regulations related to the valuation of nature. There is no legally binding directive for game appreciation in the Czech Republic at the present time. A questionnaire method (Contingent Valuation Method - CVM) was used to survey the activities of all 87 authorised experts in game management currently registered in the Czech Republic. It was found out that the game is appreciated as property, which contradicts to its legal status (res nullius). The most frequently used methods of game appreciation...
